BIOGRAPHY

Thirty-one year-old saxophonist, Cameron Millar completed his Master of Music in 2016 at the Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg, The Netherlands. In 2012 he graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Hons I) in Advanced Performance at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane, Australia. His Honours dissertation titled, “Sigurd M. Raschèr in Australia: A Reception History of the 1938 Tour” and then his Master’s research, “A Hermeneutic Analysis of Sigurd M. Raschèr’s Pedagogy” were the culmination of extensive research into the history and development of saxophone repertoire and performance idioms.

His studies have included courses with the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet and private tuition with Carina Raschèr, Andreas van Zoelen and Steffen Haß.

Cameron has performed all around the world, both as a soloist and as a member of chamber ensembles and orchestras.  During the last year in The Netherlands, Cameron performed as soloist with the NLS Fanfareorkest of ‘s-Gravendeel as well as toured Germany with the Bron Saxophone Quartet. His past successes while studying include; winning both the Willem Twee’s Lunch Concert Series Prize and the Willem Twee’s Chamber Music Prize, representing Fontys Conservatory at the 2015 Grachtenfestival Concours (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) working with the Dutch National Youth Orchestra in the Kurt Weill Ensemble and performing Darius Milhaud’s “La Création du Monde” with the Fontys Chamber Orchestra.

As an academic, Cameron has presented research and performed at international conferences such as the Australasian Saxophone and Clarinet Conference (Sydney, Australia), the last three World Saxophone Congresses (Croatia, France and Scotland), the International Society for Music Educators Conference (Thessaloniki, Greece) and the Western International Band Clinic (Seattle, USA). In 2017, Cameron had the pleasure of giving masterclasses at the Royal Conservatoire of Kazan, Russia where he also performed with organist Jelena Bazova. He has also been a full-time member of faculty in the position of Coordinator of Woodwind Studies at Sheldon College (Brisbane, Australia).

As a chamber musician, he regularly performs with pianist Chris van de Kuilen in chamber series across the Netherlands and is the soprano saxophonist of the Bron Saxophone Quartet. Both ensembles have been featured and broadcast live on National Dutch Radio.

A passionate advocate for his instrument Cameron enjoys every opportunity to demonstrate the saxophone as a serious classical instrument and performs exclusively on instruments built according to the design specifications of its inventor, Adolphe Sax.
